Virtual Development Center and an FMCG Sales team

How we helped a leading FMCG organization conduct a Virtual Competency Assessment of their entire Sales managerial workforce, spread across the country.

THE SITUATION

A leading multinational FMCG organization had a large Sales team, spread across the entire country. The managerial section had more than 50 employees, based out of more than 20 unique locations across the country. As a part of a comprehensive development process for them, Think Talent was asked to conduct a comprehensive assessment of these employees on key competencies like Planning & Prioritisation, Operational Effectiveness, and People Management.

The idea behind these virtual assessments was to tackle such situations where geographical spread became a limiting factor in getting all the people together. The Client business and the HR leadership agreed that the logistical costs incurred along with the inconvenience caused can be saved by deploying a virtual assessment.

To ensure success, Think Talent team needed to create a set of assessment tools that were seen by the participants as relevant to the business context and reflected the operating language and issues faced by them.

THE SOLUTION

To kick-off, the process, Think Talent worked with a diagnosis report created by the client HR team, around key development themes for this group of managers. Thereafter, a follow-up diagnosis process was conducted to further clarify and confirm the findings of the report. Based on the findings, a competency framework and a set of assessment tools were designed.

The In-Basket exercise, as well as the Psychometric Test, were administered online while the Behavioural Event Interview was conducted over Skype and phone. The entire Assessment center took 12 days to complete, starting from participants logging in to take the exercises and then completing the virtual interview process.

Based on the inputs received from the multiple exercises, an Individual feedback report was created for each participant providing them with insight for areas that needed further attention, in each competency. A comprehensive group report was created to provide senior management stakeholders with an overall competency view of the participant group and key collective development areas.

THE OUTCOME

The client through the Virtual Developmental Program achieved two goals-

  • VDP created self-awareness for the participants about their development gaps and helped orient them properly for the development phase of the program.
  • It provided the leadership with a clear view of the collective SWOT of the managerial team.
